A Step Change at Astute - Introducing Design Director, Lewis Brimmell

Lewis is a Chartered Civil Engineer with both the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT). With over a decade of experience in Highway and Infrastructure Design, Lewis brings a wealth of technical expertise and leadership to this exciting new chapter for the business.

Throughout his career, Lewis has worked as both Project Manager and Highways Technical Lead on a number of high profile schemes across the UK, including the M60 Junction 13 improvements in Greater Manchester, the Winsford Town Centre upgrade and Newark Southern Link Road. Until recently, Lewis has been advising on one of the most exciting projects in the UK, the Universal Studios Theme Park near Bedford.

His experience spans the full design and delivery lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and implementation onsite, giving him a well-rounded perspective on the challenges and opportunities in modern transport infrastructure. Lewis brings expertise across the various infrastructure design disciplines, having delivered a wide range of active travel and highway schemes during his career to date. His project work has involved leading key elements such as assessing option viability, preparing cost estimates and coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering inputs.

Beyond project delivery, Lewis has played an influential role in the wider industry. He was named ICE North West Emerging Engineer of the Year in 2017, is a previous Rennie Medal nominee and was Highly Commended in the CIHT North West Emerging Engineer Awards in 2023. A passionate advocate for professional development, he recently held the role of ICE North West Committee Chair (2024/25) and actively supports the development of future engineers as an ICE and CIHT Mentor and Reviewer, where he has overseen numerous candidates gaining their professional qualifications.

In his new role at Astute, Lewis will be establishing and growing the Transport Design team, strengthening the business’ capability to deliver high-quality design solutions across a range of infrastructure and development projects. His vision is to combine technical excellence with innovation, ensuring that transport design plays a key role in enabling sustainable, efficient, and future-ready communities.

We are thrilled to welcome Lewis to the team and look forward to working with him as he builds and leads our Transport Design offer. His blend of technical knowledge, project leadership, and industry engagement will be a huge asset to both our clients and our people.
